First time running a multi-day stage ultra marathon and wondering what kit you need to take? Here’s a fly by of the running essentials I’ll be packing in my Dixons Carphone Race to the Stones kit.
Over the years I’ve tried and test loads of different products from single application sun cream to anti-blister socks and I’ve built a solid list of go-to gear I know I can rely on. I’m a get-to-the-airport early guy and so I tend to over prep, so the amount of stuff I take might not suit everyone, some people prefer to run lighter. But there are things on this list I definitely recommend giving them a go. It’s really important to try these things and see what works for you but I can hopefully help point you in the direction of some great products as a kick off.
My race kit isn’t perfect, I don’t think it ever will be and I always look to refine it for each race, looking at what worked well and what didn’t quite cut it so there are some new things in this list too, such as the Ultimate Direction ultra vest and the 2XU compression tights but I’m confident these are going to bring something extra to my race kit.
What you pack for a multi-day event can be very different from a single day ultra, as you have things like recovery and nutrition to think about between each stage, not to mention getting some comfortable sleep in camp. A lot will depend on whether you have to run with your kit like you do at the Marathon des Sables or you can have your bag sent to you campsite for you as you can at the Race to the Stones.
So if you want to know what a middle of the pack runner sticks in his dry bag for 100km over two days hit play now. From the anti-chafe oils to essential race fuel, this is what I rely on come race day.
