Back in 2015 I ran the Marathon des Sables. I can still remember, like it was yesterday, the trepidation as February arrived and the Sahara loomed large. Knowing we were just two months away from heading into the unknown of the desert for the first time was pretty intimidating. I had no idea how my training, my kit and my nutrition would hold up. During my MDS training and the race itself I learnt a lot about how to cope with the demands of the Sahara desert ultra. Some of it the hard way. Although almost everything went right for me that week in the Sahara.
Somehow I squeezed into the Top 100, finishing 91st overall and had the experience of a lifetime. I know the questions that’ll be buzzing around in the heads of MDS newcomers and all I can say is that if you prepare well, run smart and believe in yourself, the rest will take care of itself.
